This year’s speedups from the Tesla S Model Plaid, Lucid Air to the Audi E-Tron GT, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and Polestar 2 are aimed at those expected to achieve immeasurable performance in conjunction with a luxurious car’s finesse.

Michelin hopes to sell eight times the amount of EV tires that it does today. To do this, it merits a distinct kind of tire, one that’s built for firm launches and “instant torque,” and one that can remain quiet when there’s no rumbling gasoline engine.

The Pilot Sport EV also has a tread design and a compound engineered for the very high torque often found in electric cars’. Its solution requires a rough compound at the middle of the tread to withstand heavy launches, including a softer compound used on the outer surface area for handling and grip. The compound used is identical to that utilized in the official tires used by Formula E racing.

The design also gives priority to something that requires more focus on electric vehicles—road noise. Michelin indicates a 20% decrease in “perceptible road noise” (170-230 Hz) due to a customized polyurethane foam that is part of the content mix.

Around the same time, tire-and-wheel choices may have an enormous impact on performance and range—as can size options—so that the tire often has to be engineered with that in mind and, more specifically, rolling resistance.

At the point of sale, Michelin calls the tire CO2-neutral. This is done by participating in carbon offsetting programs by investing, in its case by the Livelihoods Carbon Fund.

The company’s design efforts are not limited strictly to the performance corner of EVs. It’s even testing a GM airless tire on the Chevy Bolt EV.

Pilot Sport EV tires will be available beginning this year and manufactured in 11 different original-equipment sizes plus five market sizes for rims ranging from 18 to 22 inches.
