Product Development Engineer - Electromagnetic Design
Reporting to: Product Development Director
Hours: 37.5hrs per week (although flexibility sometimes required to meet deadlines for specific customer projects)
Background:
PML is a world leader in the design and manufacture of electric motors, industrial joysticks and control systems for electric vehicles.
Through significant investment and innovation over the past 4 years the company has developed an innovative motor/drive package offering enhanced efficiency and major performance benefits.
Through key account partnerships the company is now applying this new technology into strategic markets, namely electric/hybrid vehicles, wind turbines, leisure industry products and underwater propulsion systems.
The company has a multi-disciplined engineering team primarily consisting of mechanical designers, electronic engineers, software engineers and product development engineers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Production of electromagnetic designs, improving existing and new motors/generators given performance specifications.
- Manage projects on time and on budget.
- Liaise on modifications as necessary with all areas of the Engineering Department during the design phase.
- Liaise with material control and suppliers on specification and availability of materials, keeping abreast with the latest technologies for electromagnetic design.
- Deal with technical enquiries from all internal and external sources as well as visiting customers to give support.
- Analyse competitors' products and compile relevant technical reports.
- Produce ongoing modifications to machine design as needed to improve safety, performance, cost effectiveness, reliability, ease of manufacture etc. to suit customers.
- Produce technical reports, test specifications and conduct motor/generator testing.
- Use of motor sizing & motor design software.
- Understand customer product specifications and develop appropriate test processes, test jigs and then perform the necessary tests.
Desirable Skills:
- A qualified Engineer, primarily from an electronics background.
- The ideal candidate should have previously worked on the design of rotating electrical machines or similar electromagnetic devices.
- Good theoretical and practical knowledge of electric motors/generators, in particular permanent magnet DC motors/generators.
- Candidates with a PhD will have a distinct advantage.
- Knowledge of electromagnetic finite element analysis.
- Computer literacy and strong analytical skills.
