PML serves up high ambient Pancake motors for tanks
PML Flightlink are pleased to announce the success of our modified GPM16LR motors for high ambient temperature military applications. The motors have been developed to suit a customer’s specific need for a cooling fan motor for a Challenger tank. The fan provides cooling for the APU but only operates when the main engine is not running.

Although the application would have suited a brushless DC motor the high ambient temperatures of up to 150°C (302°f) would have destroyed the internal hall sensors rendering the unit totally useless. PML’s Printed armature brushed motors are ideally suited to withstand the high temperatures as all the internal mechanical components can be modified to suit. PML carried out extensive testing over a number of years to ensure that all the internal components are optimised for these conditions. These tests involved modifying bearing grease, brush materials, armature modifications, additional EMC suppressing components as well as a new design so that the motor could accommodate twin armatures to effectively double the power output of the unit. The PML GPM16LRD can carry continuous currents of up to 26Amps and deliver 550watts of continuous power at speeds in excess of 4000rpm and is approved to MOD environmental tests DEFSTAN principles. The twin shaft seals also ensure the motor has environmental protection rating of IP55. This special motor builds on PML’s reputation for delivering customised motors to customers to suit their application. The motor can be delivered with single, twin or hollow shaft and is EMC tested to military specification. The printed armature or Pancake motor technology, used in the GPM16HRLRD, utilises the benefits of axial air gap motor technology and offers instantaneous torque so that the fan blade is accelerated to running speed in minimum time.
