Solar car racing ‘sees the light’ and switches to PML EW series ‘In wheel motors’
In 2005 three teams in the University solar car races in Turkey used the EW series inwheel motor. The motors were so successful that this year six teams adopted the technology.
The race rules allow each team a small on board battery. The battery does not hold enough power to complete the race and therefore solar panels are used to make up the difference. With volume of solar panels, mass, and efficient use of power key to success the choice of motor is paramount.

PML engineers help University students with the final preparations prior to race time.
Due to the EW series motors very high operating efficiency of around 95%, the Inwheel motor made a perfect choice for the solar car teams.

The EW3030SA pictured above was the favourite choice giving 100Nm continuously up to 1000rpm.
The substantial taper roller bearings used in the EW motor were used as the actual vehicle bearings making fitting fast and easy and again reducing mass.
The motors are supplied to IP68 rating as standard and therefore no additional environmental sealing or protection was required by the teams.

Race Day. All teams lined up on the impressive starting grid of the new Istanbul Park formula 1 race track. A perfect sunny day for a solar race!

Universities from other countries have also used the EW series in wheel motor in solar car applications including Australia, USA, and Cyprus.
